Exfoliation Guide: How to Safely Exfoliate with Korean Products

Exfoliation Guide: How to Safely Exfoliate with Korean Products

Exfoliation is the secret to a smooth, bright, and radiant complexion. By removing the
buildup of dead skin cells, you can unclog pores, fade hyperpigmentation, and allow
your other skincare products to penetrate more effectively. However, over-exfoliation
is a common problem that can lead to a damaged skin barrier and irritation. The
Korean approach to exfoliation emphasizes gentleness and consistency. This guide will
teach you how to exfoliate safely and effectively.
Physical vs. Chemical Exfoliation
Physical Exfoliation: This involves manually scrubbing the skin with a product
containing small particles (like sugar or jojoba beads) or using a tool (like a brush
or a washcloth). While satisfying, it can sometimes be too harsh and cause microtears in the skin if not done gently.
Chemical Exfoliation: This uses gentle acids to dissolve the “glue” that holds
dead skin cells together, allowing them to be washed away. It’s often
considered more effective and gentler than physical exfoliation when done correctly.
Understanding Chemical Exfoliants: AHA, BHA, & PHA
AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid)
What it is: Water-soluble acids like Glycolic Acid and Lactic Acid.
What it does: Works on the surface of the skin to improve texture, fade dark
spots, and brighten the complexion.
Best for: Dry, sun-damaged, or dull skin.
Our Pick: An AHA product, e.g., COSRX AHA 7 Whitehead Power Liquid

BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid)
What it is: Oil-soluble acids, primarily Salicylic Acid.
What it does: Can penetrate deep into the pores to dissolve excess sebum and
dead skin cells, making it highly effective for treating acne and blackheads.
Best for: Oily, acne-prone, and combination skin.
Our Pick: A BHA product, e.g., Some By Mi AHA BHA PHA 30 Days Miracle
Toner

PHA (Poly Hydroxy Acid)
What it is: A new generation of hydroxy acids, like Gluconolactone and
Lactobionic Acid.
What it does: Works similarly to AHAs but has a larger molecule size, meaning it
doesn’t penetrate as deeply. This makes it much gentler and less likely to cause
irritation.
Best for: Very sensitive, dry, or reactive skin.

How to Exfoliate Safely
1. Start Slow: If you’re new to chemical exfoliation, start by using a product just 1-
2 times a week. You can gradually increase the frequency as your skin builds
tolerance.
2. Don’t Mix Actives (at first): Avoid using multiple exfoliating acids or other
active ingredients like retinol and high-concentration Vitamin C in the same
routine until you know how your skin reacts.
3. Exfoliate at Night: Exfoliating can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so
it’s best to do it in your evening routine.
4. Always Wear Sunscreen: This is crucial. You must wear a broad-spectrum
sunscreen every day when using exfoliating acids.
5. Listen to Your Skin: If you experience redness, stinging, or peeling, you may be
over-exfoliating. Take a break for a few days and focus on hydrating and soothing
your skin
